Gameday Game Recap:
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (12/13/08)--
It wasn't the homecoming that Concordia first-year head coach Chris Howe was hoping for in his return to the place where he played college hockey and later served as an assistant coach. The Cobbers gave up at least two goals in each period and lost 8-3 in a non-conference game at St. John's on Saturday. The five-goal loss breaks a string of five games for Concordia where they had either won or played their opponent to within two goals.
Three different Cobber players scored in the game. Alec Holen scored the first goal for CC after the Johnnies had taken a 3-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes of the first period. Holen's goal at 16:01 of the opening period came courtesy of an assist from Knut Bitustoeyl. For Holen it was his fifth goal of the year.
Concordia then allowed St. John's (2-8-1) to score the next three goals and take control of the game. The Johnnies scored the only two goals of the second period and furthered compounded the Cobbers' second-period woes. CC has been outscored 9-1 in the second period in the last four games against MIAC opponents. Overall in the season Concordia has been outscored by a combined margin of 25-12 in the second frame.
After St. John's jumped to a 6-1 lead the Cobbers were able to score the next two goals and get back to within three goals at 6-3 with 9:25 left in the game. Marc Harrie notched an unassisted power play goal at 9:34 and then Mark McNaughton added an even-strength goal just 1:01 later on assists from Jared Collen and Casey Olson. That would be as close as CC would come as SJU finished off the game by scoring a pair of goals less than three minutes apart beginning at the 13:13 mark.
St. John's outshot Concordia 39-22 for the game. The Cobbers split the goaltending duties between Elliot Okland and Mike Persson. Okland started the game and played the first 34:30. He made 17 saves and allowed five goals. Persson finished off the contest and stopped 14 shots while giving up the final three scores. SJU goalie Vince Wheeler made 19 saves to pick up his second win of the year.
Both teams were 1-for-5 on the power play and both took seven penalties for 14 penalty minutes.
The two teams will finish off their non-conference series on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. at the national Sports Center in St. Cloud.
