Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/05/08)-- Pivotal Play: St. Olaf held a 2-0 lead late in the second period and was able to work the puck into the Cobber end in the final 30 seconds of play. A shot from the point was ultimately tipped in by Bryan Osmundson with only :02 seconds left in the period to give the Oles the all-important three-goal lead at 3-0. If Concordia is able to get to the dressing room only down 2-0 then their goal midway through the third frame would have changed the complexion of the game even more dramatically.
Unheralded Performance: St. Olaf goalie Nick Krauss entered the game having lost the only two games of the season for the Oles. He stepped up and turned aside the first 22 shots he faced and kept the Cobbers off the board in the first two periods of play. He came up with a couple of critical scoring chance saves in the first period when the game was tied at 0-0. For the night he stopped 27 shots and earned his third win of the year.
Key Stats: Both teams had a combined 18 shots in the first and third periods. The Oles outshot CC 17-7 in the opening period but then Concordia held a 11-6 advantage in the third period. However, in the second period St. Olaf outshot the Cobbers 14-10. Junior Bryan Osmundson had a hand in all three St. Olaf goals. He scored the second and third scores for the Oles and assisted on the opening goal of the game. Michael Weiss had the only goal of the game for Concordia. He scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year at 9:24 of the third period. Bronson Shepherd and Mark Johnson were credited with the assists on the play. For Shepherd it was his first collegiate point.
Noteworthy: Concordia had only two penalties in the game and both came in the same infraction. Jared Collen was whistled for a hooking and roughing at 15:50 of the second period. The two penalties ties for the fewest taken in a single game since the 2005-06 season when they had only one penalty against Bethel on Feb. 10. The Cobbers have now gone 22 conference games without a victory. The last MIAC win for CC came at the end of the 2006-07 campaign when they beat St. John's 6-3.
The Quote: "Like so many other sports, hockey is a game of inches. That was the difference in the second period between us getting the puck out of the zone, or away from the goal, and having them score three times." - Cobber head coach Chris Howe
Spin Ahead: Concordia will complete their two-game series against St. Olaf on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
