Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/26/08)-- Concordia used a five-goal third period to cruise past UM-Crookston 9-2 on Wednesday. The victory snaps a 32-game winless streak for the Cobbers and gives head coach Chris Howe his first collegiate victory. Junior Shawn Goos had two goals and two assists to help CC to the streak-stopping win. Concordia is now 1-7-1 on the year.
The seven-goal win is the largest since the Cobbers beat the Golden Eagles 8-0 on Dec. 16 during the 2006-07 season. The nine goals scored by CC is the most by a Concordia team in a single game since the start of the 2005-06 campaign when they beat Northland 9-1.
UM-Crookston, who was playing the game as an exhibition remains at 1-7-0 for the season.
Concordia was able to get goals at critical parts of the entire game and was finally able to seize control of a game at the make-or-break moment. Leading 4-2 heading into the final period, the Cobbers wasted little time getting the first goal of the final stanza as Marc Harrie scored at the 1:36 mark to give CC the all-important three-goal lead. The goal ignited a five-goal period that saw CC score three goals in a span of 3:06 in the middle of the frame.
The Cobbers also started the game well - scoring the first two goals in the opening period before Crookston cut the margin to 2-1 heading into the first intermission. Senior Cory Johnson scored his first goal of the year since joining the team three games ago after spending the fall with the Concordia football team. Johnson's goal at 13:53 broke the ice for CC after the team had put up 12 shots on the Golden Eagle goal but couldn't crack the scoreboard. Michael Weiss followed with his team-leading fifth goal of the year less than one minute later when he banged home a rebound on a play set up by Mark Johnson and Jason Makinen.
The low point of the game for Concordia came at the 15:15 mark of the opening period when Ryan Clukey was sent off the ice on a five-minute major for checking from behind. Crookston scored just :13 seconds into the power play to bring the score to within one at 2-1 as the teams headed into the break.
Concordia was able to kill off the remained of the power play and then struck for the next two goals to take a 4-1 lead. Goos scored the first of his two goals on the night at 12:10 and then Alec Holen tipped home his fourth goal of the year at 14:44. The Golden Eagles brought the game to within one as they scored their second power play goal of the night at 19:08.
That set the stage for the Concordia heroics in the third period. Harrie's goal started the fire and subsequent goals from Goos, Makinen, Mark McNaughton and Mark Johnson all added up to the 9-2 win. For Makinen, McNaughton and Johnson it was their first collegiate goal.
The Cobbers outshot the Golden Eagles 39-25 for the game. CC was 3-for-5 on the power play as both goals in the second period came on the man-advantage situation. Crookston went 2-for-7 on their power play attempts. CC goalie Elliot Okland made 23 saves to earn his first collegiate victory and UMC tender Jacob Schira turned aside 30 shots in the losing effort.
Concordia will put their two-game unbeaten streak on the line when they return to MIAC action on Friday, Dec. 5. The Cobbers will host St. Olaf at 7 p.m. in the first game of their two-game series.
