Gameday Game Recap:
WINONA, Minn. (11/22/08)--
It wasn't the result that Concordia head coach Chris Howe and the rest of the Cobbers were looking for but it wasn't a loss and, in the end, that is a big win for CC. The Cobbers picked up their first point of the year by skating to a 3-3 overtime with St. Mary's in Winona on Saturday. The tie snaps an 18-game losing streak for Concordia that dated back to Jan. 19 from last season.
The Cobbers also carried on their recent theme of outshooting their opponent but not getting a win. In Friday's 6-5 overtime loss, CC outshot SMU 49-29. On Saturday Concordia had a 38-27 edge in shots on goal but had to settle for the tie.
The game started perfectly for the Cobbers. They came out flying and outshot the Cardinals 18-4 in the first 20 minutes and carried a 2-0 lead into the second period. Senior Alec Holen scored the first CC goal at 1:20 of the opening frame. The goal would be the first of three points on the day for Holen. On the weekend he recorded seven points and had a hand in seven of the eight CC goals. Erick Galt gave the Cobbers a 2-0 lead at 14:29 when he scored his second goal of the season on the power play. Marc Harrie and Holen were credited with the assists.
The second period was a complete 180-degree turn for CC. Showing their youth, the Cobbers left their game in the locker room, allowed three goals and were outshot 15-7. The cardinals scored three straight goals in a span of less than 12 minutes and recorded their second straight three-goal second period of the weekend. Three different SMU players scored before Cobber junior Knut Bitustoeyl tied the game with only :22 left to go in the period. Bitustoeyl's second goal of the year came courtesy of Holen and Ryan Clukey.
The team's skated through a scoreless third period and then through five minutes of overtime. It marked the first time in three tries this season that CC has not dropped an overtime decision. Concordia was 0-2 in OT games heading into Saturday.
For the game, Concordia junior goalie Mike Persson stopped 24 shots and SMU tender Greg Moore made 35 saves.
The Cobbers will now look for their first win of the year when they host UM-Crookston on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
