Gameday Game Recap:
ST. PETER, Minn. (2/23/08)-- It's not the way you would have wanted to script it, but in the end it was the final game behind the bench for Concordia head coach Steve Baumgartner. Unfortunately the Cobbers gave up five goals in the first 10:19 of the first period and ended up losing at Gustavus 10-1 on Saturday.
Concordia was never able to recover from the first-period barrage and wound up the season with a 1-23-1 overall record and a 0-15-1 mark in conference play. By virtue of their two wins over the weekend, Gustavus earns the No.4 seed in the MIAC playoffs and will host St. John's in the first round of the conference tournament. The Gusties end the regular season 13-11-1 in all games and 10-6-0 in league play.
The Cobbers scored their lone goal in the game less than two minutes after Gustavus had their five-goal outpouring in the first period. Junior Cory Johnson scored on the power play at 12:08 to bring CC within four at 5-1. For Johnson it was his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Kirby Markowsky and Matt Cosmos were credited with the assists on the play. The one positive out of the weekend for CC was the success of the power play unit. They scored on the power play in both games against Gustavus, and after not scoring on the power play for six straight games, the Cobbers finished the year by scoring nine man-advantage goals in their last nine games.
The Concordia rally would end with Johnson's goal. Gustavus countered with a goal less than two minutes later.
After the teams skated through a scoreless second period, Gustavus finished off the contest by scoring four straight in the third period.
For the game, Gustavus outshot Concordia 42-17. The Cobbers used all three goalies in the game. Mike Persson started the game but was unable to capture the magic from Friday night. Persson played the first 10:19 and made six saves. Josh Hand came on in relief and stopped seven shots in the next 31:40. Jeremy Boniface finished off the game and made 19 saves. Gustie goalie Josh Stewart stopped 16 shots to pick up his eighth win of the year.
