Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/08/08)--
The great curses in sports include the Curse of the Bambino, the Curse of the Billy Goat and the Madden Curse. Those three can now move to make room for the Curse of the Second Period. For the fifth straight game Concordia played virtually even with its opponent in the first and third periods only to see the game come completely undone in the second period. On Friday the Cobbers and Augsburg were tied at 3-3 in the first and third periods. The Curse of the Second period once again took its toll as the Auggies used a 3-0 second frame to claim a 6-3 win in Moorhead.
With the loss, Concordia remains in search of its first MIAC win of the season. The Cobbers are now 0-10-1 in league play and 1-18-1 overall. The Auggies win for the second time in the last three games and move to 2-9-0 in the MIAC and 4-14-2 in all games.
The game almost turned into an individual scoring battle between the Cobbers' Cory Johnson and Augsburg's Dan Carlson. Johnson scored two of Concordia's three goals on the night. Carlson did that two better as he scored the Auggies' first three goals of the game and finished with four goals and an assist on the night. Ryan Clukey had an assist on each of Johnson’s goal for the Cobbers and now leads the team in points with two goals and ten assists for 12 points. Carlson added to his team-leading point total. He now has nine goals and seven assists for 16 points.
The game was an up-and-down affair with both teams being committed to getting the puck in their offensive zone. The teams combined for 84 shots on the night with the Cobbers holding a 46-38 edge. The 46 shots for Concordia ties a season high. CC also had 46 shots against Lake Forest on Nov. 9. Cobber goalie Jeremy Boniface made 32 saves in the game and Augsburg netminder Andrew Kent turned aside 43 of the 46 shots he faced and earned his fourth win of the year.
With all the driving towards the net, there were several multiple-penalty situations in the game as teams tried to protect their goalie from the onslaught of attackers. For the game, Concordia and Augsburg combined for 22 minor penalties. The Auggies were whistled for 12 penalties for 24 minutes while CC was sent to the box 10 times for 20 minutes. Neither team could find a rhythm on the power play. Concordia was 1-for-11 on the power play and Augsburg was 1-for-6 in their man-advantage attempts.
The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Youth Hockey Rink.
