Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/01/08)-- Cue the Led Zeppelin music. In 1973, the English rock band released the song, "The Song Remains the Same." In 2008, the Concordia men's hockey team has been playing the cover of that song over and over in the second period of each game. On Friday against No.8-ranked St. Thomas, the Cobbers watched as a 2-1 deficit at the end of the first period was turned into a 6-1 mountain after the second 20 minutes. The inability to stay close in the second period cost CC once again as they fell 8-2 to the Tommies in Moorhead.

Concordia has now been outscored 50-10 in the second period of games this season. Since the turn of the New Year, the Cobbers have allowed 22 goals in the second period and have only scored two.

The loss keeps Concordia winless in their last 17 games. CC is now 1-16-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the MIAC. The win pushes St. Thomas into first place in the MIAC. The Tommies are now 7-2-0 in the conference and 13-4-1 in all games.

Of the 10 goals in the game, five were scored on the power play. Both Concordia goals were on the man-advantage situation and three of Tommies' eight goals were on the power play. In the game, CC was 2-for-5 on the power play and UST was 3-for-5.

St. Thomas scored the only goal of the first period when Nick Nelson notched his second goal of the year at 12:23. The opening frame had more of a defensive mindset as the two teams only combined for 11 shots on goal with St. Thomas holding an 8-3 advantage.

The game broke open midway through the second period when the Tommies scored three goals in a span of 2:42. UST made the score 2-0 on the power play at the 3:58 mark of the middle period. The Cobbers then countered with a power play goal of their own when Michael Weiss was left alone in front of the goal and took a pass from Ryan Clukey and slid it into a nearly wide open net. The 2-1 margin would last less than one minute as UST scored at 7:10 to push the lead back to two at 3-1.

At that point the band could be heard warming up. Four minutes later the music was blaring and the latest rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic was in full force.

In the third period, St. Thomas tacked on two more goals post six straight scores before CC got one back at 9:53 on Dustin Holland's second goal of the season. Shawn Goos and Knut Bitustoeyl were credited with the assists.

In the end, seven different St. Thomas players scored goals. Alex Arnason was the only UST player with more than one goal on the night.

The Tommies outshot the Cobbers 39-13 for the game, including 31-10 over the final two periods. Concordia split the goaltending duties. Mike Persson started the game and made 13 saves in the first 32:43 of play. Jeremy Boniface relieved Persson after the Tommies' fifth goal and stopped 18 shots in the final 27:17. Tyler Chestnut went the distance for St. Thomas and made 11 saves to earn his 12th win of the season.

The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
