Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/26/08)--
If the Concordia men's hockey team could skip the second period, the Cobbers might be sitting in the top half of the MIAC and looking at a run at the postseason. Unfortunately, in order to get to the end of the game you have to pass through the second period and that is what has cost CC for the entire year.
The story was no different on Saturday against Bethel as Concordia took a 1-0 lead after the first period and then watched as the Royals scored three straight goals in the second period en route to a 5-2 win in Moorhead on Saturday. The Cobbers have now been outscored in the second period by a combined total of 45-9. The Cobbers have been ahead, or tied with, their opponents in the last four conference games and have come away with a record of 0-3-1 during that stretch.
The good news in the game for Concordia was that the Cobbers ended their power play scoreless streak. CC was 0-for-32 on the power play entering the game and then watched as that streak reached 34 scoreless man-advantage situations. The 35th time was the charm for Concordia as Shawn Goos was able to finish on the Cobbers' third power play attempt of the game. Dustin Holland and Knut Bitustoeyl set up the slump-busting goal.
CC opened the scoring in the first period when senior captain Cory Johnson notched his third goal of the year at the 15:48 mark. That lead would hold up until the second period when Bethel scored three goals in the first nine minutes of play. Goos then brought the Cobbers to within one at 3-2 with his goal at 15:47.
BU was able to shut the door on the Concordia offense in the third period. Royal goalie Adam Damjanovich stopped all 21 CC shots in the final frame. CC also went 0-for-3 on the power play in the final period.
For the game, Bethel outshot Concordia 48-37. Cobber goalie Mike Persson, playing in his second straight game, made 43 saves. Damjanovich finished with 35 stops and has now beaten CC four straight times.
Concordia will stay at home and take on St. Thomas on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at the Moorhead Sports Center.
