Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/25/08)-- Concordia outplayed Bethel in the first and third periods. Unfortunately there are three periods in hockey and the Cobbers allowed three goals in the middle frame and lost 3-1 to the Royals in Moorhead on Friday. The second period continues to haunt CC throughout the season. They have now been outscored in the middle period by a combined total of 42-8.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 1-14-1. The Cobbers have not won in the past 15 games. CC is now 0-6-1 in league play. Bethel wins for the first time in the past three games and improves to 10-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the MIAC. The Royals are now in second place in the conference standings.

The two teams skated through the first 20 minutes of play with a pond hockey mentality. Both squads were content to just skate up and down the rink and not get caught up in any physical play. Concordia outshot Bethel 10-7 in the first frame but Bethel had the better of the chances.

The second period was all Bethel as they scored three goals and outshot CC 12-6. Matt Hall scored two of the team's three goals in the period. He scored a power play goal at 2:07 to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. He would then add the eventual game-winner at 8:47. The final BU tally also came on the power play. Jeff Balvin notched his ninth goal of the year at the 9:38 mark, just 51 seconds after hall made the score 2-0.

Concordia reappeared in the third period. Trailing 3-0 heading into the final stanza, Cobber sophomore Knut Bitustoeyl scored the lone goal of the game for Concordia less than two minutes into the period. His even-strength goal at 1:39 gave the Cobbers a brief ray of hope. Ryan Clukey and Michael Weiss were given the assists on the goal. CC was never able to get the all-important second goal and had to settle for the two-goal loss.

The Cobbers outshot the Royals 32-28 in the game. They posted a 26-16 margin in the first and third periods combined.

CC goalie Mike Persson made 25 saves and was saddled with the loss. Bethel netminder Aaron Damjanovich stopped 31 shots to earn his 10th win of the year. He has now beaten the Cobbers in three straight games.

The Cobber power play once again failed to provide a goal. CC was 0-for-3 on the power play and has not scored in their last 32 attempts. Concordia is now 2-for-42 (4.7%) on the power play in the last seven games.

The two teams will finish off the two-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
