NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/19/08)-- Concordia gave up seven consecutive goals after the first period and lost 9-2 to St. Olaf in Northfield on Saturday. The Cobbers and Oles were tied at 2-2 after the opening period of play before the Ole avalanche buried CC. The seven straight goals sent Concordia to their 13th loss in the past 14 games. The Cobbers are now 1-13-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the MIAC. St. Olaf moves to 6-8-3 in all games and has their conference record even out at 3-3-2.
The two teams traded goals through the first 18 minutes of play in the opening period. The Oles started the scoring when Sam Windsor scored just 1:11 into the game. Concordia tied the game at 8:38 when Shawn Goos connected on his fourth goal of the year. Ben Umhoefer restored St. Olaf's one-goal lead at 11:16 before Cory Johnson knotted the game at 2-2 at the 18:05 mark. Ryan Clukey and Alec Holen were given the assists on Johnson's second goal of the year. All four goals in the period were even-strength tallies.
The bottom fell out of the game for the Cobbers midway through the second period when CC allowed four goals in a nine-minute frame. Dylan Mueller collected the eventual game-winner at 8:55 and then the Oles added three more scores before the 18:00 mark of the frame. For Mueller it would be the first of his three goals in the game.
St. Olaf added three more goals in the third period to bring the final total to 9-2.
For the game, St. Olaf outshot Concordia 37-24. On the weekend, the Cobbers were outshot by a combined margin of 91-56.
Concordia played all three goalies in the game. Jeremy Boniface started the game and played the first 35:21 of the game. He allowed five goals and made 17 saves. Josh Hand came in to finish off the second period and gave up one goal on the three shots he faced. Friday night hero Mike Persson entered the game in the third period and gave up three goals and stopped nine shots. St. Olaf went with Mike Busch for the entire game. Busch made 22 saves in the game and earned his second win of the season.
The Cobbers' power play scoreless streak continued. On Saturday, CC was 0-for-7 on the power play and has not scored in their last 29 power play attempts. Concordia is 2-for-39 (5.1%) on the power play in the last six games. St. Olaf went 2-for-5 on the power play as they scored their final two goals on the man-advantage situation.
Concordia returns home for a six-game home stand. The Cobbers will host Bethel on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. and then on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. They will then play St. Thomas the following weekend and Augsburg on Feb. 8-9. All six games will be played at the Moorhead Sports Center.
