Gameday Game Recap:
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (1/18/08)--Concordia rode the hot hand of sophomore goalie Mike Persson and came away with a 3-3 overtime at St. Olaf on Friday. The Cobber netminder stopped 51 shots and helped CC end their 12-game losing streak. Concordia is now 1-12-1 overall and 0-4-1 in MIAC play. The Oles, who rallied for two goals in the third period, move to 5-8-3 overall and 2-3-2 in the conference.
Concordia used the stellar play and timely scoring of Tony Webber and Casey Olson to take a 2-0 lead after one period and then a 3-1 lead after two periods of play. Webber opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game. Webber scored an unassisted goal, his first tally of the season, at 2:32. After Ben Umhoefer tied the game at 1-1 less than three minutes later, Olson scored the first of his two goals in the game 1:14 after Umhoefer's game-tying score. Michael Weiss was credited with the assist on Olson's first goal of the season. The three-goal flurry in the opening 6:20 would be the only scoring in the first period.
The Cobbers opened the second period with a bang as Olson collected his second goal just 29 seconds into the middle frame. Matt Cosmos recorded the assist on the play.
CC would take a 3-1 lead into the third period before the Oles were able to finally put quality chances on goal. Will Smith scored at 4:10 of the final period to bring St. Olaf to within one at 3-2. David Adams then tied the game for good at the 9:34 mark.
Neither team was able to score in the second half of the third period or in the extra session. Persson came up with several game-saving stops down the stretch and into overtime. The Oles had a pair of power play attempts in overtime but couldn't get the puck past Persson who put on his best Roberto Luongo impersonation for the night.
In the end, Concordia was outshot 54-32. Persson made 51 saves to pick up his first point of the season. St. Olaf split the goaltending duties. Bryce Eberwein started the game and made 12 saves in the first period. Jake Busch entered the game at the start of the second period and stopped 17 shots in the final 45 minutes of play.
The Cobber power play woes continued. CC went 0-for-5 on the power play and has not scored in the last 22 power play attempts. Over the last five games, Concordia is just 2-for-32 (6.2%) on the power play.
St. Olaf was also held scoreless in man-advantage situations. The Oles were 0-for-7 on the power play for the night.
The two teams will finish off their series on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena.
