Gameday Game Recap:
BURLINGTON, Vt. (12/30/07)--
recap courtesy of the St. Michael's SID
Despite falling behind early, Neumann College took down Concordia College on the second and final day of the Men’s Ice Hockey Holiday Classic at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, 6-3. Neumann’s Hedden could not extend his streak of hat tricks to six games but did tally two goals on the afternoon to make it six for the weekend and grab MVP honors for the third annual Holiday Classic.
Although Concordia was severely out-shot in the game, the Cobbers made good use of their first shot of the game three minutes into the contest when senior forward Dustin Holland (Pilot Mound, Minn.) made a nifty grab of a flying puck from sophomore Shawn Goos (Fergus Falls, Minn.) to send home his first goal of the year. Neumann held a 11-6 shot advantage and capitalized on their eleventh and final shot one minute before intermission when senior forward Mark Van Vliet (Dorchester, Ont.) beat a screened Mike Persson (Regina, Sask.) for a power play goal.
In a second period that the Knights out-shot the Cobbers 17-8, Hedden reasserted his presence with his fifth and sixth goal of the weekend and two in the period on a breakaway with Neil Trimm (Westmeath, Ont.) and Sean Cryer (Brampton, Ont.) and another minutes later from Van Vliet and senior Mike Gooch (Mantua, N.J.) to push the lead to 3-1. The Cobbers would cut the deficit to one with a goal from junior Mark Clukey (Moorhead, Minn.) moments before intermission but Neumann responded immediately on Trimm’s 13th goal of the year from 27 ticks before intermission.
Concordia came out of the gates quickly to again cut the margin to one with a well-timed redirection by Goos on a shot from freshman Matt Nordhagen (Thief River Falls, Minn.). Midway through the final period, Neumann came alive to score two goals in a span of less than one minute as junior Kyle Casey (Teulon, Manitoba) cashed in his 12th goal of the year and junior Jesse Cole (Stratford, Ont.) finished his fourth score of the year on a redirection out of the air from Cryer during the power play.
Neumann’s Collichio made his 15th appearance on the year to record 17 saves in the team’s eighth straight win.
Concordia’s goaltender Persson made 39 saves in his fourth appearance on the year.
