Gameday Game Recap:
BURLINGTON, Vt. (12/29/07)--
recap courtesy of St. Michael's SID
Concordia gave up three straight goals in the second period and start of the third period and lost 3-2 to St. Michael's (Vt.) in the third annual St. Michael's Invitational.
The Purple Knights killed five Concordia power plays in the first but could not withstand the sixth as the Cobbers capitalized seconds after a Saint Michael’s penalty midway through the second period. For Concordia, it was senior forward Matt Cosmos’ (Middlebury, Conn.) team-leading fourth goal of the year on an assist from sophomore Knut Bitustoeyl (Asker, Norway) and sophomore Casey Olson (Rock Springs, Wyo.). The Purple Knights would respond minutes later when senior Dan Anctil (Rochester, N.H.) was fed for his second goal of the year by senior Andrick Deppmeyer (Claremont, N.H.) and sophomore Jean-Maxime Legare (St. Augustin, Que.). Saint Michael’s added on to their lead in the second when Mero fired a trademark slap shot from just inside the blue line setup by junior Burns and Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J.) on a 5-on-3 power play.
In the final period, senior forward Erik Caron (Kanata, Ont.) stretched the Purple Knights lead to two on a power goal from Burns and Mero. Caron’s fifth goal of the year was answered by Concordia’s junior Alec Holen (Thief River Falls, Minn.) who was assisted by juniors Ryan Clukey (Moorhead, Minn.) and Cory Johnson (Moorhead, Minn.) but would prove to fall short as Concordia dropped their ninth straight since winning the season opener.
The Purple Knights junior goaltender Tyler Bilton (Penticton, B.C.) exhibited deft agility and quickness, stopping 19 shots for his third win of the year (3-3-1).
For the Cobbers, junior goaltender Jeremy Bonafice (Goderich, Ont.) pushed aside 35 shots while dropping his sixth straight decision of the season in net (1-6-0).
