Gameday Game Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/08/07)-- The good news for the Cobbers on Saturday was their defense halved the offensive output of St. Mary's from Friday. The bad news is that the score for the game still resembled a football contest. Concordia allowed six straight goals in the first and second periods and then watched as the Cardinals tacked on the extra point in the third period as the Cobbers' fell 7-2 to SMU on Saturday in Moorhead.

The loss is the eighth straight for Concordia. The Cobbers, after winning the opening game of the season, fall to 1-8-0 overall and 0-4-0 in conference play. St. Mary's wins for the third straight time and improves their overall mark to 4-5-0 and their MIAC mark to 4-2-0. The Cardinals are momentarily on top of the league standings.

St. Mary's couldn't duplicate their five-goal, opening-period outburst from Firday but were still able to put up a pair of goals in the final 10:06 of the first frame. The real undoing for Concordia came in the second period when SMU scored four times. All four of the goals came when the teams were even up, and all four came in the second half of the period. The four goals turned a 2-0 back-and-forth game into another lopsided score.

The Cobbers did finish the game by outscoring the Cardinals 2-1 in the final 20 minutes of play. Concordia scored both of their goals on the power play. Matt Cosmos scored his third goal of the season at 9:08 and then Cory Johnson netted his first goal of the year at the 10:35 mark.

St. Mary's closed the book on the scoring list when they scored a power play goal at 16:04. David Gross scored his second goal of the game and put the Cardinals up 7-2 with less than four minutes to play.

St. Mary's outshot Concordia 39-29 for the game. CC went 2-for-3 on the power play, while SMU was 2-for-5 with the extra skater. The Cobbers spilt the goaltending duties in the game. Jeremy Boniface played the first two periods and made 24 saves. Josh Hand was in goal for the final 20 minutes and turned aside eight of the nine shots he faced. Dan Smith went the distance for St. Mary's he stopped 27 shots to pick up his second win of the weekend and fourth of the season.

Concordia will now have an extended break for the Christmas holiday break. The Cobbers will return to action when they play at St. Michael's (Vt.) on Sat. Dec. 29 at 1 p.m. CC will then play Neumann (Pa.) on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. to finish off the St. Michael's tournament.
