Gameday Game Recap:
MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/07/07)--
For Concordia on Friday, St. Mary's was like an Alberta Clipper howling through the Red River on a cold January day. As hard as the Cobbers tried to brace themselves and keep out the impending storm, there was nothing they could do, and in the end, they were buried under an avalanche of goals. The Cardinals scored 11 goals in the first two periods and pummeled CC 14-3. The loss is the seventh straight for Concordia and drops their overall record to 1-7-0 and their MIAC mark to 0-3-0. SMU wins for the second consecutive game and moves into a first-place tie in the conference standings with a 3-2-0 league record. They are now 3-5-2 overall.
The 14 goals allowed by Concordia is the most since the 1985-86 season when they conceded 15 to St. Cloud State in a 15-6 loss. It is the most goals given up in a conference game since 1985 when they were beaten 18-5 by St. Thomas. The 11-goal deficit represents the largest margin of defeat since the Cobbers were beaten 12-1 at the hands of St. John's at the start of the 2005-06 season. The 14 goals scored by the Cardinals represent the most goals scored in a single game since they downed UW-La Crosse 17-3 in 1988.
The game was decided in the first five minutes of play when St. Mary's emerged from the dressing room ready to fly. The Cardinals pumped the Cobbers for three goals in the first 5:45 of play. They would add two more goals in the final 6 1/2 minutes of play in the opening frame to take a 5-1 lead into the first break.
The second period was more of the same blizzard. SMU scored their sixth goal in the opening minute of play and then added four more before Concordia could shovel themselves out to score their second goal of the game to make the score 10-2 with 3:36 to go in the second period. The Cardinals added one more goal at the 19:54 mark of the second period and sledded their way to an 11-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Content to turn the third period into a sleigh ride through the woods, St. Mary's only managed to score three goals in the final 20 minutes of play to bring the final score to 14-3.
A trio of Cobber players scored goals. Alec Holen and Lance Watrin scored their first goals of the season and Brent Sands collected his second goal in the past three games. For Watrin it was his first collegiate goal.
Concordia also used three players in goal. Starting goalie Jeremy Boniface played the first 4:43 of the game, did not make a save and allowed two goals. Boniface was replaced by Mike Persson who lasted the next 22:15 and was pulled in favor of Derek Neu. Persson made 18 saves and conceded five goals. Neu finished the game off by turning aside 12 shots and giving up seven goals.
The Cardinals shared the goaltending duties. Dan Smith started the game and played the first two periods. He made 12 saves and earned his third win of the year. Greg Moore did his best Terry Mulholland impersonation and came on in the third period and allowed one goal and stopped 13 shots.
For the game, St. Mary's outshot Concordia 44-28. The Cardinals scored five of their goals on the power play as they went 5-for-9 on the man-advantage situation. The Cobbers have now allowed 12 power play goals in the past three games. Opponents have scored in 12 of their past 21 power play situations during that stretch.
The two teams will finish the series on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
