Gameday Game Recap:
CROOKSTON, Minn. (11/27/07)--
Concordia showed the effects of having a 17-day layoff, as they allowed five unanswered goals in the second and third periods and fell to UM-Crookston 6-1 on Tuesday in Crookston. The loss is the fourth straight for the Cobbers who started the year with a win over UW-Eau Claire and now drop to 1-4-0. The win is the first of the year for the Golden Eagles who had lost six straight to start the season.
The game was determined by the specialty teams for both squads. Concordia gave up four power play goals and one short-handed tally in the five-goal loss. The lone Cobber goal was also scored on the power play.
After the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie in the opening period of play, Crookston jumped on CC for four goals in the second period and added one for good measure halfway through the final 20 minutes of play.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the game when John Lombardi scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 14:14. Lombardi was the only Crookston player to score more than once in the game. Less than four minutes later, senior Kirby Markowsy brought the teams back even when he netted a power play goal at the 17:51 mark. For Markowsky it was his team-leading third goal of the year. Markowsky had not scored a single goal in his career at Concordia before this season. Alec Holen and Cory Johnson were credited with the assists on the goal by Markowsky.
The wheels fell off the Cobber cart in the second period when Crookston scored four times on 11 total shots. The Golden Eagles scored the trifecta of goals in the period - an even-strength goal, a power play goal and a short-handed goal. The fourth was also on the power play as Crookston went 2-of-2 in their power play opportunities.
For the game, Crookston went 4-for-6 on the power play, while the Cobbers were 1-for-4 on the man-advantage situations. Concordia outshot Crookston 28-23 for the game.
CC goalie Mike Persson stopped 17 of the 23 shots he faced. Golden Eagle netminder Eric Everson made 27 saves to earn his first win of the year.
Concordia will now open up MIAC play when they travel to St. Paul to take on Hamline in a two-game series on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1.
