Gameday Game Recap:
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (11/02/07)-- Concordia continued their trend of success in season-opening games by pulling out a 2-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire in Eau Claire, Wis. on Friday. The Cobbers are now 7-3-1 in their last season-opening games and have won three straight season openers. The win helps the Cobbers extract a bit of revenge on the Blugolds after CC fell to Eau Claire 9-0 last season.
The game was determined on the power play. All three goals in the game were scored by the specialty teams. Concordia had more man advantage chances in the game and played a more disciplined style of play. The Cobbers were 2-for-9 on the power play, while Eau Claire scored only the lone goal in their five chances.
The Blugolds dominated the shot chart but were turned back by the goaltending of Cobber junior Jeremy Boniface. Boniface silenced the critics in his first game by stopping 31 shots including all 15 in the third period when Eau Claire pressed for the game-tying goal. Last year Boniface had a 4.33 goals against average and allowed at least four goals in four of his last five starts in 2006-07. Looking to assert himself as the team's No.1 goalie in 2007-08, Boniface routinely stoned the Eau Claire forwards and kept Concordia in the game for the first two periods.
The Cobbers were the first team to get on the board. After playing a scoreless first ten minutes of the game, CC scored the first of their two power play goals when Shawn Goos tucked home a shot at 10:16 after assists from Brent Sands and Knut Bitustoeyl. Goos scored one goal in all of last season and ironically it also came on the power play.
It took UW-Eau Claire almost 25 minutes to finally get a puck by Boniface. The Blugolds netted their power play goal on a shot from Andrew Johnson at the 4:55 mark of the second period.
The game-winner for CC came at 12:26 of the second period. Defenseman Kirby Markowsky took a pass from Alec Holen and blasted the puck past Blugold netminder Tyler Brigl.
For the game, UW-Eau Claire outshot Concordia 32-19. Brigl had 17 saves in picking up his first loss of the season. The Blugolds took 10 penalties for 20 penalty minutes in the game and Concordia was whistled for only six penalties. Last year the Cobbers took fewer than six penalties in only four of their 25 games.
Concordia will be looking to extend their winning streak when they play at UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:05 p.m. The Pointers opened their season with a 5-3 loss at home against St. John's on Friday night.
