Gameday Recap

WINONA, Minn.-- Just when Concordia thought it was safe to get back in the water, the injury shark reached up and took down another Cobber. Concordia sophomore outside marksman Brock Citterman suffered a deep bruise in his quadriceps and was lost in the first half after playing 18 minutes. Jason Miller, who refuses to be knocked to the canvas, lost his front tooth during the game. He was able to find the tooth, stop the bleeding and reenter the game.

In the end, it was a good news-bad news game for Concordia head coach Duane Siverson. The Cobbers played their most complete, most in-sync game since watching their bench turn into a "who's who" among top MIAC players. The bad news is that with the injuries and new positions, Concordia was unable to stop the St. Mary's offense during critical stretches in the game and lost 81-60.

For the first time since Concordia lost the third of their three starting players to injuries, the Cobbers scored 60 points in a game. Unfortunately, the Cobber defense allowed St. Mary's to shoot 57.1% (12-of-21) from 3-point range.

Besides the above average shooting percentage from behind the arc, the Cardinals also shot 58.0% (29-of-50) from the floor, including a torrid 72.0% (18-of-25) in the second half in claiming the 21-point victory.

The loss is the seventh straight for Concordia. The Cobbers are now 4-10 in the MIAC and 5-13 overall. St. Mary's gets back on the winning track after losing by 10 points to Macalester on Saturday. The cardinals are now 7-6 in the conference and an even 9-9 overall.

The game turned against the Cobbers in a nine-minute stretch sandwiched around the halftime break. Concordia was trailing by only three points at 25-22 with 4:00 remaining in the first period and were outscored 10-3 heading into the break. St. Mary's then came out of the intermission and built the lead to 17 points in the first 5:00 of the second half. During that stretch, Concordia committed seven turnovers, while allowing St. Mary's to shoot 66.7% (8-of-12) from the field. Five of the eight field goals during that span were layups.

Ryan Johnson was the only Concordia player to finish the game in double figures. He had 10 points and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor. Gavin Ganab hauled down a game-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points.

St. Mary's had four players score at least 10 points in the game. Michael Batterman did most of the damage, scoring a game-high 18 points. He was 8-of-10 from the field. Alex Walker turned into the long range bomber for the game. His 15 points all came from behind the arc. He made five of his six shots from 3-point range.

For the game, Concordia committed 20 turnovers and St. Mary's converted those miscues into 32 points. The Cardinals were able to take care of the ball on their offensive end. They had 13 turnovers in the game and only allowed the Cobbers to turn those errors into 15 points.

The Cobbers will return home for a pair of games. Concordia will host Macalester on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 8:00pm and then match up against Carleton on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3:00pm. Both games will be played in Memorial Auditorium and both can be heard on the internet at: www.cord.edu/dept/sports/broadcast.php.
