MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/07/09)-- Karl Olson made sure Concordia would secure its first conference victory this season Monday at Memorial Auditorium.

Olson drained six consecutive foul shots in the final 30 seconds to lift the Cobbers to a 55-48 victory against Carleton in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball.

Concordia (4-3, 1-2 MIAC) snapped a three-game losing streak after starting the season with three consecutive victories.

“We were getting a little sick of losing so we knew we had to take care of business,” said Olson, who scored a game-high 17 points.

The game was the conference home opener for Concordia, which had played its previous four games on the road.

“It’s just good to get a win right now,” Cobbers coach Rich Glas said. “We’ve struggled recently on the road and we struggled tonight to be quite honest, but we battled. … In the end, we made some plays. We made some shots and won the game and Karl was big with his free throws.”

Carleton took a 44-43 lead with 2 minutes, 40 seconds to play after Blaise Davis drained a 3-pointer from the right wing.

However, the Cobbers scored on five consecutive possessions in the final two minutes.

Johnathon Molina had a 3-point play with 1:40 to remaining off a steal and a layup. That score staked the Cobbers to a 47-44 lead. Concordia never trailed from that point.

On the Cobbers’ next possession, John Fraase scored a basket in the post. Olson followed that up by making 6 of 6 foul shots.

“When we had to make some plays, we executed and got the ball where we wanted it to be,” Glas said.

Glas hopes the way his team finished the game serves as a confidence builder.

“You have to have a confidence that we can make plays here and I just don’t think this unit has that yet. You just got to have guys believe that they are going to knock down shots.”

The Cobbers shot 36 percent (19 of 53) from the field. They shot 31 percent (8 of 26) from the floor in the second half.

“We just showed we can compete even when the shots aren’t falling and we aren’t playing our best basketball,” Olson said. “We showed are heart. … I thought we did a great job of defending today.”
