SJU Invite Meet Recap
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (4/01/06)-- With the temperature hovering in the 40's, Concordia opened the outdoor track and field season by placing third at the St. John's Invitational in Collegeville, Minn.
The usual suspects stole the show for the Cobbers as Angie Pfeiffer, Natalie Hanson and the 4x400-meter relay team all captured victories at the meet. Concordia finished the meet with a final team score of 126.0 points which was 15.0 points behind runner-up UM-Duluth and 36.5 points behind meet champion St. Ben's.
Hanson pulled off the rare double win in the 5000 meters and the pole vault. She ran a 18:04.68 to win the race by over 32 seconds. She then went on to capture the pole vault with a height of 10-6. Her win in the 5000 meters was a first for Hanson and was the fourth fastest in school history.
Pfeiffer started the outdoor season just like she finished the indoor campaign. Her time of 26.15 in the 200 meters bettered her competition by .30 seconds. She still has not lost a race in the 400 meters or 200 meters outdoor this year.
The 4x400-meter relay team won the event in a time of 4:03.79, which is just outside the top 10 in program history. The relay team came from behind to overtake UMD in the latter part of the race.
Other top performers for Concordia included Erica Lundgren who finished third in the 10,000 meters in a time of
40:44.39. That mark is within 10 seconds of breaking into the top ten in school history. Sarah Sorvaag opened her outdoor season by finishing second in the discus (118-9), third in the hammer throw (136-6) and 14th in the shot put (32-10.25). Fellow field teammate Danielle Norby captured third in the long jump (16-5) and eighth in the high jump (5-1).
Track standouts Amy Ravenhorst, Rachel Charpentier and Leah Hegland brought home the other top three finishes for the Cobbers. Ravenhorst ran a 60.81 in the 400 meters and finished third, while Charpentier clocked a 4:59.30 to also finish third in the 1500 meters ann Hegland placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.60.
Concordia will continue to compete in the chilly spring weather when they participate in the NDSU Invite on Apr. 8 at 1:00pm.
