Coe NCAA Qualifier Meet Recap

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (5/17/06)-- After competing in her final MIAC Championship Meet of her career, senior Natalie Hanson decided to take on another challenge and try to qualify for the NCAA National Outdoor Meet in the pole vault. Her quest started off on a terrific note as she tied the school record and provisionally qualified for nationals in the first of three NCAA qualifying meets for the Cobbers.

Hanson posted a height of 11-1.75 at the Coe NCAA Qualifying Meet at Coe College in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday. Hanson's mark equals the record set in 2004 by Renee Splichal '04. Her mark is currently the 39th best in Division III this season. She will most likely have to clear 11-6.50 to have a realistic chance at qualifying for the national meet in the pole vault. Hanson has already automatically qualified for nationals in the 800 meters and has provisionally qualified in the 1500 meters and as part of the 4x400-meter relay team.

Cobber freshman jumper Danielle Norby also helped her national cause as she bettered her national provisionally qualifying mark in the long jump. Norby entered the meet having provisionally qualified at the Cobber Twilight Meet with a jump of 18-1.0. On Wednesday at Coe, she posted a distance of 18-1.5 and has now moved up to 34th on the national list. That mark is also the sixth best in the history of the Cobber women's track and field program. She will need to jump 18-5.75 to crack the top 20 and have a chance at earning a spot at nationals.

The only other Cobber to compete at the meet was thrower Sarah Sorvaag. Sorvaag competed in the discus and hammer throw. She threw the discus 115-10 and recorded a distance of 125-0 in the hammer. Both marks are more than 20 feet shy of the provisionally qualifying distance.

The trio of Cobbers will now travel to La Crosse, Wis. to compete in the UW-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier on Thursday, May 18 at 4:00pm.
