Leah Kay was named to the 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (7/10/09)-- Concordia junior Leah Kay (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) was named to the 2009 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Track and Field Team it was announced on Thursday. Kay also helped the Cobbers earn the distinction of being named one of the 51 schools from around the nation to be named as a 2009 USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team.
Kay is a Biology major who carries a 3.47 grade point average. She recently earned her fourth All-American honor - by finishing in the top eight in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Meet. She also earned All-American honors in the pentathlon at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Meet and high jump and pentathlon at the 2008 national outdoor meet.
Kay was named the .2009 USTFCCCA Indoor Region Athlete of the Year. She scored the most points of any Concordia athlete at the MIAC Outdoor Meet in 2009 and placed second in two events at the MIAC Outdoor Meet. Kay is also involved as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Adopt a Grandparent and Make A Wish Foundation.
To qualify for the award, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.
As a team the Cobbers had a GPA of 3.36 and were the fifth highest ranked team from the MIAC. Concordia finished fourth at the 2009 MIAC Outdoor Meet which helped them continue their streak of over 20 years of finishing in the top five at the conference meet.
A total of 51 Division III men’s track and field programs were recognized as 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams. Shenandoah University led all institutions with a 3.676 team cumulative GPA, followed by Whitworth University with a 3.641 team GPA. A total of 100 Division III programs made up the women’s 2009 All-Academic Teams. To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.100 cumulative grade-point average.
The Centennial Conference, Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, University Athletic Association, and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference led all conferences with six teams selected from each conference as All-Academic Teams for 2009.
