OSHKOSH, Wis. (5/23/08)-- Friday the 23rd was a very good day for Concordia sophomore Leah Kay (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) as she earned two All-American honors in a span of five minutes at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track and Field Meet held at the University of Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wis. on Friday.

Kay finished in a tie for eighth place in the open high jump with a height of 5-4.50 and climbed all the way to fifth place in the heptathlon with a final total of 4,624 points. Her total in the heptathlon was only 16 points behind the all-time school record in the event. Kay's national meet total was 74 points better than her final winning score at the MIAC Championship Meet.

Kay started the day in ninth place in the heptathlon just 41 points behind the eighth spot - which is the cutoff mark for All-American honors. She started Friday by jumping 16-05.00 in the long jump. Kay was still in ninth place after the first event. She then posted a pair of career-best marks to earn the All-American award.

She threw the javelin 121-05.00 which was the third best distance in the competition. That mark bettered her season best of 119-04.00 by over two feet.

Heading into the seventh, and final, event of the heptathlon, Kay was tied for eighth place. However, her date with destiny in the heptathlon would have to wait until she completed the open high jump competition. Having qualified in the very first outdoor meet of the season, Kay posted a height of 5-04.50 in the open high jump and watched as that mark stood up for a tie for eighth place - her first All-American honor of the day.

Kay then sprinted over to the starting line and quickly donned her running shoes for the 800 meters in the heptathlon as her fellow multi-event competitors stood and watched from the starting line. She then blistered to a 2:23.77 in the 800 meters and finished third in the race. That time allowed her to move all the way up to fifth place in the final standings of the heptathlon. Her time was also two seconds faster than her previous season best this year.
