OSHKOSH, Wis. (5/22/08)-- Concordia sophomore Leah Kay (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) was in ninth place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track and Field Meet held at the University of Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wis. on Thursday.

Kay scored 2,682 points in the first four events and is only 41 points behind eighth place which would earn her All-American honors.

Kay posted three personal-best scores out of the four events on the first day. She ran a 16.33 in the 100 meter hurdles to open the event. That time was .10 of a second faster than her previous best time this year. Kay then posted a height of 5-5 in the high jump which was just shy of her 5-5.25 she recorded to qualify for the high jump in nationals. She then finished the day by getting personal best marks in the shot put and 200-meter dash.

Kay's one-day total of 2,682 points is 52 points ahead of her one-day total that she posted when she won the MIAC heptathlon championship. She is also on pace to break the school record in the heptathlon which is held by Nicole Plante who totaled 4,640 points at the 2005 NCAA meet.

The heptathlon will conclude on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. The three events left are the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
