Meet Recap:

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (3/07/08)-- Concordia used a trio of second-place finishes in day 1 of the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet held at St. John's to grab second place as a team heading into the final day of the conference championship event.

The Cobbers finished the first 11 events of the competition with 63.0 points. They are 56 points behind meet leader St. Thomas. CC is holding an 11-point lead over Bethel who is stationed in third place.

The Cobbers were led by the runner-up finishes of Leah Kay, Kristin Slette and Valerie Glenn as they position themselves to pull off their fourth top two finish in the past five seasons.

Kay started the meet off by finishing second in the pentathlon. To put an even bigger silver lining on the perfect start, Kay's final total of 3,249 set a new school record. She broke the old mark of 3,191 set by Nicole Plante in 2005.

After starting her meet off on the right foot, Kay then finished third in the high jump with a height of 5-3.00. She finished off her day by placing eighth in the long jump with a distance of 16-2.50.

The high jump proved to be a huge point getter for Marv Roeske's crew. The Cobbers had four athletes in the top and scored 21 points in the one event. Kay was outdone by freshman Valerie Glynn in the event. Glynn also cleared 5-3.00 but had fewer misses on the way to the final height and finished second. Fellow freshman Alyssa Deutschmann went out at 5-1.75 and finished fourth. Katlin Anderson also posted a height of 5-1.75 and claimed seventh place.

Anderson's top eight finish in the high jump was her second of the meet. She also scored 3,002 points in the pentathlon and finished third. She became only the fourth athlete in school history to break the 3,000-point barrier.

Slette continues to be one of the biggest surprises of the year for the Cobbers. She recorded the third runner-up finish by racing to a 60.29 in the 400 meters. Her time is a personal best and the fifth fastest in school history.

Hailey Brenden, Alexa Kleingartner, Diane Moliva and Sarah Sorvaag were the other CC point getters on the day. Brenden finished fifth in the mile in a time of 5:16.90, while Kleingartner was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.74 and Moliva also grabbed fourth place as she recorded a distance of 48-01.25 in the weight throw. Sorvaag gave CC two top eight finishers in the weight throw as she posted a distance of 46.8.25 and finished seventh. Kleingartner's time in the 55-meter hurdles is the fifth fastest in program history and best since the 2000 season when Sara Grineski set the school record with a time of 8.49.

Concordia will hope to hang on to second place when they complete the MIAC Meet on Saturday, Mar. 8 starting at 11 a.m.
