(2/22/08)-- Concordia hosted the annual Cobber Open on Friday. In one of the best meets of the year, Concordia claimed five individual event wins, had several top three finishes and got a few surprises from athletes that had breakout meets. The top Cobber tandem of Leah Kay and Hailey Brenden didn't disappoint as they both won two events. Kay turned the double in the high jump and triple jump, while Brenden captured the wins in the mile and 3000 meters. Kay's winning jump in the high jump of 5-3.25 was below her national provisional qualifying mark of 5-5.00 but was still good enough to claim the win. Kay then posted a mark of 34-9.0 in the triple jump to win by almost two feet. Brenden ran a 5:23.93 in the mile and then recorded a personal-best time of 10:40.50. In the high jump, Kay was joined by junior Katlin Anderson at 5-3.25. Anderson's jump moved her into fifth place on the school's all-time list in the event. The biggest surprise of the meet came in the pole vault where freshman Sarah Peterson cleared the bar at 8-06.00. That mark is a personal best and ties for the 10th best pole vault in Cobber history. The other event-winner for CC was Tara Ray who won the 600 meters with a time of 1:49.84. Concordia will continue on their path to the MIAC Championship Meet when they compete in the St. Olaf Open on Mar. 1.
