(2/16/08)-- A pair of Concordia athletes posted NCAA provisional-qualifying marks on Saturday at the Bison Classic hosted by NDSU. Leah Kay jumped 5-05.00 in the high jump and Diane Moliva posted a distance of 49-08.25 to become the first Cobbers to provisionally qualify for the national meet in 2008. As a team, Concordia recorded seven top five finishes in a meet that was dominated by NCAA DI and DII teams as well as top regional squads from the NAIA. Kay finished tied for third in the high jump with her mark of 5-05.00. That is the exact height needed to provisionally qualify and is the top height in the MIAC this season. She is one of seven athletes from around the nation to provisionally qualify for the NCAA meet and is currently tied for sixth best in all of DIII. Her height is also the second best in school history. The program record for the indoor high jump is 5-6 set by Ruth Reimnitz in 1981. Moliva uncorked a toss of 49-08.25 in the preliminary heat of the weight throw event. She went on to finish sixth in the event. Her distance is fourth best in the MIAC and puts her 23rd on the list for nationals. That mark is also the third best indoor weight toss in school history. The program record is 54-4.00 set by Laura Utke in 1999. The Cobber middle distance and distance standouts once again came through for the team. Freshman Hailey Brenden ran a 5:21.70 in the mile and finished fourth. That time is her season best. Anna Hagen clocked a 3:23.48 in the 1000 meters and finished fifth, while Maria Middleton finished fourth in the 3000 meters in a time 11:01.01. The top event of the day for Concordia was the rarely-run 500 meters. The Cobbers had three runners finish in the top five. Freshman Ruth Ranum was the top CC athlete as she ran a 1:27.65 and finished second. She was joined by Whitney Derks who was fourth in a time of 1:32.70 and Camille McGoven who ran a 1:37.74 and finished fifth. Concordia will return home to host the Cobber Open on Friday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. in the Olson Forum.
