Meet Recap:
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (5/12/07)-- One is a senior that has posted dominating performance after dominating performance in her final year of competition. The other is a freshman that is just starting to realize how dominant she could be become in the conference. Together they combined to help Concordia to a fifth-place finish at the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet at St. John's.
Senior Heather Schuster won the 800 meters and the 1500 meters and is the leading candidate for the MIAC Track Athlete of the Meet.
Freshman Leah Kay backed up her second-place finish in the heptathlon last weekend by finishing second in the high jump and third in the javelin. She becomes the first Cobber athlete to earn all-conference honors in three individual events at a single outdoor meet since Sarah Severson accomplished the feat in 1998 by winning the long jump, finishing second in the heptathlon and third in the triple jump.
The duo of Schuster and Kay combined in individual events to score 42 of the team's 88 total team points. St. Thomas claimed their 23rd title in the past 26 seasons by posting a final team total of 200.5 points.
Schuster cruised to her two titles by finishing just fast enough in the preliminary and final heats. Having already automatically qualified for the national meet in her primary event in the 800 meters, she coasted to a 2:15.76 in the finals to win the event by over a second. In the 1500 meters, she ran a 4:33.55 to set a new Clements Stadium record and provisionally qualify for the national meet.
Kay finished second in the high jump with a height of 5-3.75 and third in the javelin with a mark of 115-5.
The Cobbers had two other athletes garner all-conference honors at the meet. Joining Schuster and Kay were Katlin Anderson and Kristin Slette. Anderson tied Kay's mark of 5-3.75 in the high jump but had more misses in the event and finished third. Slette ran a 59.62 in the 400 meters to also claim third place and earn her first MIAC Outdoor All-Conference award.
Honorable mention award winners for finishing fourth, fifth or sixth in an individual event included Kelly Olson in the 400 meters (6th - 60.35),
Tara Ray in the 400-meter hurdles (5th - 67.53) and Sara Sorbo in the javelin (5th - 111.0).
