Matchday Match Recap
MOORHEAD, Minn.-- At some point during the season it was bound to happen. Eventually the Cobbers were going to find a way to put solid efforts in both singles and doubles play together and come away with their first win of the season. That point was reached on Wednesday against the University of Mary when Concordia snapped their eight-match losing streak to start the season in breakout fashion as they rolled to a 9-0 win over the Marauders at home in the Olson Forum.
The shutout win for the Cobbers is the first since the 1998 season when they beat South Dakota State 9-0 on April 5.
The University of Mary loses for the second time in as many matches this season and falls to 0-2.
The match was settled early on, as the Concordia doubles teams rolled to a pair of easy wins and one dramatic, come-from-behind victory.
The #2 doubles team of Annie Styba and Mollie Miller easily dispatched Chelsey Stark and Miranda Hansen 8-0, and the #3 doubles tandem of Leigh Bonemeyer and Val Bostrom followed suit by cruising to an 8-3 win. The victory for Styba and Miller evens their season record and brings their win total to a team-high three.
The closest match of the night, and most dramatic, took place at #1 doubles where the Cobbers' team of Beth Meier and Katie Luther rallied from a 5-2 deficit to win 8-6. Meier and Luther chipped away at the Marauder's lead and then grabbed control of the match by winning the final three games. The win breathed extra life into the sails of the winless Cobbers and seemed to extract any ray of hope that the University of Mary was clinging to.
In singles play, Styba continued the excitement by winning 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.
Meier, with the momentum of her doubles win on her side, grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win at #2 singles, and Bonemeyer outlasted her opponent 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 at #3 singles.
Kelsey Schendel watched the Cobber doubles success and was determined to be a part of the first win of the season. After trading games to open her match at #4 singles, she exploded to post a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Miller and Bostram added the final two points to the shutout. Miller pounded away to capture a 6-2, 6-4 win. Bostram then closed out the night by winning her first match of the season. She forced multiple errors with her ground strokes and came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Concordia will be looking to carry over their success into conference play when they host St. Olaf on Sunday, Mar. 19 at 9:00am at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
