Match Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/10)-- On an almost perfect day for outdoor tennis, Concordia had their sunny skies turned cloudy as they fell 8-1 to St. Kate's in Moorhead. The Cobbers only win came at No.3 doubles where Julie Olson and Kelly Kalvoda pulled out an 8-6 victory.

The loss is the second straight for the Cobbers after having won three consecutive matches in the middle of March. Concordia is now 5-7 in all matches and 2-4 in conference play. The Wildcats scratch their way to 6-9 overall and even their MIAC record at 4-4.

The match started out like it would go down to the final singles bouts with a pair of evenly matched teams. Olson and Kalvoda earned the win at No.3 doubles and lone Cobber senior Amy Freeman and Mel Gail almost gave CC a lead heading into singles play. Freeman and Gail lost 9-7 at No.2 doubles in a match that went back and forth throughout all 16 games.

The win by Olson and Kalvoda moves their record to 3-1 on the year. They have won three of their first four matches since being paired together in the middle of March.

In singles play, Concordia had a pair of matches decided in the super-set tie breaker and both times St. Kate's was able to pull away at the end to grab the narrow wins. Gail lost 10-8 in the super-set tie breaker at No.4 singles and Katie Edin dropped a 10-7 decision at No.1 singles.

The Cobbers will stay at home and host cross-town rival MSU Moorhead on Monday, Apr. 19 at 4 p.m.
