Concordia-Moorhead 13-6/5-5 MIAC Match Recap: ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/28/09)-- It wasn't easy. But in the end the result was all that the Cobbers needed as they rallied to win the final four singles matches against St. Kate's and grab a 5-4 win on Tuesday in St. Paul. The comeback win was made even more dramatic because the victory helped Concordia clinch their first-ever berth into the MIAC Tournament. The win was also the fifth conference victory of the season which is more than the past five seasons combined. Concordia finishes the regular season at 5-5 in league play. They are now 13-9 overall. The 13 wins is the second most in program history. The match took a wrong turn for the Cobbers at the start. Concordia dropped two of the three doubles matches and fell behind 2-1 heading into singles play. CC then watched as St. Kate's won the first two singles bouts to take a 4-1 lead in the match and leaving Concordia all but hopeless in their attempt to gain a playoff berth. That's when the tide turned and Concordia's top three singles players seized control of the match. No.1 singles player Andrea Rognlien cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win and No.2 singles player Katie Edin followed suit by posting a 6-2, 6-3 win. Ayah Kamel then gutted out her second straight super-set tiebreaker win. The sophomore from Fargo won the first set 6-1 but then dropped the second set 6-4. Kamel then refused to make many unforced errors in the tiebreaker and claimed a 10-6 win to push the match even at 4-4. The match then came down to the No.6 singles bout. Cobber junior Amy Freeman posted her second record-setting win in as many years as she recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory to put the match away and put the Cobbers into the postseason. Last year Freeman won the decisive match that helped Concordia snap their four-year conference losing streak. The Cobbers will be the No.6 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. They will face No.3 seed St. Olaf on Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m. at Gustavus. The two teams met on Monday with the Oles prevailing 6-3.
