College of Saint Benedict 15-8/6-4 MIAC Match Recap: FARGO, N.D. (4/26/09)-- Concordia's playoff picture turned like the weather in the Fargo-Moorhead area on Sunday as clouds rolled in and the forecast is still up in the air. The Cobbers had a chance to post sunny skies and all but lock up their first-ever playoff spot with a win over St. Ben's, but ran into a team that had just as much to play for and lost 7-2. The loss drops Concordia's conference record to 4-4 on the year. They have two conference matches remaining and will need at least one win to grab one of the six playoff spots for next weekend's conference tournament. The Cobbers are now 12-5 overall this season. The Blazers improve to 15-8 in all matches. They finish the MIAC regular season at 6-4 and barring a miracle will finish in the top five and earn a spot in the conference playoffs. The doubles matches set the tone for the entire day as Concordia played well but were undone by a St. Ben's team that was on top of their game. The Cobbers started the day by taking the win at No.1 doubles. Andrea Rognlien and Katie Edin recorded a 8-5 win to give CC a 1-0 lead. That would be one of the only two bright spots on the day as CSB cruised to an 8-1 decision at No.2 doubles. The Blazers then claimed an 8-6 win at No.3 doubles in a match that could have swung the entire outcome. In singles play, St. Ben's used their momentum from the pair of doubles wins and won five of the six bouts. The lone Cobber singles win came at No.3 singles where Ayah Kamel reduced her unforced errors in the super-set tiebreaker and rallied to come away with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 win. Concordia will play at St. Olaf on Monday, Apr. 27 at 3 p.m. and then square off against St. Kate's in St. Paul on Tuesday, Apr. 28 at 4 p.m. A win in either match could send the Cobbers into the MIAC postseason for the first time in program history. |
