Saint Mary's University 6-8/2-6 MIAC Match Recap: FARGO, N.D. (4/19/09)-- In one of the most dramatic conference matches in recent history, Concordia won the final four singles matches against St. Mary's and posted a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals in Fargo, N.D. on Saturday. The win shows just how far the Cobbers have come in a single year as last season St. Mary's blanked the Cobbers 9-0. The win is the third straight for Concordia and ups their overall record to 11-2. CC is now 3-1 in the MIAC. The Cardinals have their four-match winning streak come to an end and fall to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in league play. The back-and-forth match came down to the No.4 singles match between Concordia's Ashley Leister and SMU's Toni Troumbley. Leister won the first set 6-2 but then dropped the second set 6-4. With both teams crowded around the court to watch the super-set tiebreaker, Leister plowed her way to a 10-6 win. The win capped Concordia victories by No.1 singles player Andrea Rognlien, Ayah Kamel at No.3 singles and Mollie Miller at No.5 singles. For Rognlien it was her team-leading 10th singles win. She is now 10-2 in her first collegiate season. Kamel is right behind Rognlien as she wins her ninth overall match of the year. The Cobbers dug themselves a hole in doubles play. CC fell behind 2-1 after the doubles competition. Only the No.1 doubles tandem of Rognlien and Katie Edin pulled out a win. The duo recorded an 8-3 victory to post their eighth win of the year. Concordia will turn around and host regionally ranked Carleton on Sunday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m. |
