Match Recap:

FRIDLEY, Minn. (2/07/09)-- Concordia debuted the new-look Cobbers for the 2009 season as they steam-rolled Northwestern 8-1 on Saturday in Fridley in the season opener for both teams. The win shows just how far the Cobbers have come in just a few short years as it it the first win in a season opener since the 2002 season and avenges a 5-4 loss to the eagles at the start of last year.

Another telling sign for the 2009 Concordia team is that their No.1 singles player from last season, Ashley Leister, is now playing at No.3 singles and the team's No.2 singles player from 2008 is playing at No. 5 singles.

Concordia wasted little time in flexing their new-found muscles on Saturday. The Cobbers took all three doubles matches and lost only one game in the process. CC then turned their attention to singles play where they won five of the six matches and lost only two games in the No.4, No.5 and No.6 singles matches.

The Cobber fanatastic freshmen tandem of Andrea Rognlien and Katie Edin tore through their singles matches to earn their first collegiate wins. Rognlien, playing as the team's No.1 singles player, posted a 6-2, 6-2 win and Edin followed suit at No.2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The two also paired at No.1 doubles to win 8-0.

Another Cobber newcomer recorded a convincing win at No.4 singles. Ayah Kamel cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win to earn her first college victory. She also recorded an 8-1 win with Ashley Leister at No. 2 doubles.

Mollie Miller and Amy Freeman rounded out the singles wins for CC. Both players "double bageled" their opponents to pick up their first wins of the year. Miller also teamed with Melanie Gail to win 8-0 at No.3 doubles.

Concordia will open the MIAC season on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 8:30 a.m. against St. Thomas. The match will be played at Courts Plus in Fargo.
