ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/03/06)-- The old saying is that "walks will haunt." If that's the case then the Hamline pitching staff built the biggest house of horrors on Wednesday this side of the Amityville Horror. Concordia was given 34 walks in the 12 innings of play and went on to sweep the Pipers 9-2, 17-11 in St. Paul. The second game was called after five innings due to darkness.
The pair of victories pushes the Cobbers' final MIAC record to 10-12, the most conference victories since head coach Stacey Holm took control of the Cobbers in 2003. Concordia finishes the year with a 15-19 overall record. Hamline sees its eight-game winning streak come to a crashing end. They finish their campaign with a 7-15 record in league play and a 19-21 overall mark.
The two teams were locked in a tight battle in the first game until Concordia scored eight runs on three hits and five walks in the top of the sixth inning. That outburst sealed the 9-2 win in the opener. For the game, Concordia was outhit 6-4 but racked up 15 free passes. Not a single Cobber player had more than one hit in the game, but five different players had at least two walks in the game. Shantelle Nogowski led the way with three walks.
Lindy Sparby held the Pipers to only one earned run and six hits. She finished the game with four strikeouts to pick up her team-leading ninth win of the season.
The second game was more of the same. The Cobbers were issued an unbelievable 19 walks in the nightcap in a game that lasted only five innings and turned into a marathon by the second inning.
Concordia scored 17 runs in the second game and only produced six hits. They were outhit 13-6 in the game. The Cobbers scored multiple runs in a ll five innings and produced at least four scores in three of the five frames. The prototypical inning for the Concordia offense occurred in the fourth inning when they scored four runs one just one hit. They were aided by four walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches. All told, Hamline conceded 13 wild pitches in the second game.
After finally being allowed to see some pitches in the strike zone, Nogowski was sizzling at the plate for the Cobbers. She went 3-for-3 in the second game and had an unbelievable six RBIs. She was the only Concordia player with more than one hit in either game. Nogowski finishes the season with a .337 batting average after entering the year with a career .218 average.
Cobber freshman Jill Reinert started the game and lasted the first three innings. She allowed five earned runs but hung around long enough to pick up her fourth win of the year. She finishes the season with an even 4-4 record. Sparby threw the final two innings and was credited with her first save of the season.
