Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn.
(4/22/06)-- Concordia batters struck out 29 times in their series with St. Mary's, and the Cobbers were never able to find a way to get to the Cardinal hurlers and lost 2-0, 2-0 in Moorhead on Saturday.

Jenny Scipp and Erin Leone combined to pitch 14 scoreless innings, strike out 29 and allow only five hits as the Cardinals swept the Cobbers for the first time in three seasons. The two losses push Concordia back under the .500 mark in conference play. The Cobbers are now 7-9 in the league and 12-16 overall. St. Mary's improves to 15-3 in the MIAC and 16-11 overall.

Despite being shut down by the St. Mary's pitching staff, Concordia kept each game close behind the pitching of Lindy Sparby and a stingy Cobber defense. Sparby pitched both games for Concordia and only allowed four runs and 13 hits in 14 innings of work and Concordia did not commit an error in either game, marking the first time in conference play they have posted a clean defensive sheet. Both games were decided late in the contest as the Cardinals scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings in game 1 to come away with the win, and then produced single-run innings in the sixth and seventh innings in the second game to pull away for the two-run victory.

In the opener, Schipps' riseball had Concordia completely off balance as she struck out seven of the first nine batters she faced. The Cobbers finally scratched out a hit against Schipp in the fourth inning when Kelli Niess slapped a ball between the pitcher and third baseman that was unplayable for either player. Concordia's only other hit came in the seventh inning when Amanda Michaelson legged out an infield hit to the shortstop.

Schipp finished with 15 strikeouts and faced only 23 batters - two over the minimum.

The Cardinals scored in the fifth inning on a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and then a clutch, two-out single from Danielle Geske. St. Mary's duplicated the feat in the sixth inning when they scored off a one-out walk, a wild pitch and a clutch, two-out single from Nikki Jung.

Sparby finished the game allowing only five hits and striking out three.

The second game was a carbon copy of the first, only the St. Mary's pitcher changes. Leone picked up where Schipp left off, striking out 14 and allowing only three hits.

The Cardinals scored their runs after a double in the sixth inning and a leadoff walk in the seventh. Sparby went the distance again for Concordia, allowing eight hits and striking out four.

Schipp, playing in center field in game 2, went 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Geske continued her hot ways at the plate, going 2-for-2 in the nightcap and finishing at 3-for-5 for the day.

Niess was the only Concordia player to connect on more than one hit on the day. She went 1-for-3 in the opener and then 1-for-2 in the second game.

Concordia will jump out of the frying pan and land back in the fire when they host two-time defending national champion St. Thomas on Sunday, Apr. 23 at 1:00pm at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
