MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/17/06)-- Concordia used the strength of 25 hits and 18 runs to come up with their first conference sweep of the season as they bettered Bethel 9-3 and 9-1. The second game was called after six innings due to the eight-run rule. The Cobbers received a home run in each game from the bat of Krys Abrahamson who finished the day with eight RBI's.
The two wins brings the Cobbers' season win total to 10 games, marking the 11th straight season that Concordia has recorded double-digit win totals. Concordia is now 10-14 on the season and 5-7 in the overall. Bethel drops to 3-9 in league play and 13-15 overall.
It took Concordia's offense four innings to awaken after the Easter holiday break. The Cobbers trailed 2-0 after three innings in the opener before breaking out for a pair of runs in the fourth inning. That mini-burst gave way to three runs in the fifth inning and then four runs in the sixth inning as the Cobbers quickly put the game out of reach.
Concordia starting pitcher Lindy Sparby was the recipient of the new-found offensive attack. She held the Royals to four hits in picking up her sixth win of the season. Leadoff hitter Kelli Niess continued her hot streak as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stole base. She was the instigator behind the Cobber hit attack that banged out 12 hits and saw seven different players collect at least one hit.
Concordia carried the momentum over into the nightcap, scoring four runs in the first three innings en route to their second straight nine-run production. Freshman Jill Reinert did double-duty for the Cobbers as she threw a complete-game, two-hitter and was also 3-for-3 at the plate. Reinert did not allow an earned run in the game and struck out seven to earn her second win of the season. She also lowered her ERA to a team-leading 4.30.
Abrahamson once again supplied the power. She ended the game on a grand slam in the sixth inning that gave Concordia the eight-run lead. She went 2-for-4 in the second game and finished the day 3-for-8. Niess upped her hitting streak to nine games by going 2-for-4. She also scored two runs and stole her team-leading 14th base of the season. Eight different Cobber hitters had at least one hit in the game. Game 1 starting pitcher Lindy Sparby hit her first home run of the season as the Cobbers pounded out five extra-base hits in the game.
Concordia will turn around and host two-time defending national champion St. Thomas on Tuesday, Apr. 18 at 4:00pm.
