Gameday Game Recap

NORTHFIELD, Minn.
(4/13/06)-- Concordia watched 2-0 leads in both games in their series with St. Olaf evaporate in the late innings as the Cobbers were swept by the Oles in Northfield, Minn. on Thursday.

In each game, Concordia grabbed a 2-0 lead in the middle innings only to have the margin erased late in the game on two-out rallies and lose 3-2. In the opener, the Oles cashed in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2 and then won the game in the ninth inning on a two-out single after a pair of wild pitches moved the eventual winning run up from first to third base. In the second game, St. Olaf scored all three runs in the sixth inning after Cobber pitcher Lisa Kott retired the first two batters in the inning.

The twin losses drops Concordia to 3-7 in the MIAC and 8-14 overall and returns them back to Moorhead with an 0-4 record after back-to-back road doubleheaders at Gustavus and St. Olaf. The Oles collect their first league sweep of the year, and only third overall, and tie the Cobbers with a 3-7 mark in conference play. St. Olaf is now 9-15 in all games this season.

Concordia scored both of their runs in the first game in the fourth inning. The Cobbers broke open a scoreless tie with a two-run single by Tessa Manderfeld. Manderfeld delivered the clutch hit with two outs after Concordia loaded the bases.

The lead lasted one inning as St. Olaf tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning and then won it in the ninth inning. Lindy Sparby went the distance for the Cobbers. She allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out five. Shantelle Nogowski and Jill Reinert had multiple-hit games for the Cobbers. Both players went 2-for-4 on the day. Reinert also scored one of the Cobbers' fourth-inning runs.

In the second game, Concordia had a pair of hits in the first inning but were unable to score after two base-runners were thrown out at third base. The Cobbers finally tore apart a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning. Sparby scored on a Kott double after getting a single to start the inning. Kelli Niess then singled to bring Kott home and give Concordia a

2-0 advantage.

The lead lasted until the bottom of the sixth inning when St. Olaf plated three runs on  two hits. Concordia aided the Oles in the process by committing two errors. Of the three runs scored in the inning only one was earned.

Kott pitched the first 5.2 innings of the game and allowed one earned run. She also only gave up three hits. Reinert came on to get the final out of the sixth inning for the Cobbers.

Niess continued her success against conference pitching. She went 2-for-3 in the nightcap and drove in one of the two Cobber runs. She has now hit safely in the past seven games and has had multiple-hit games in two of the past three games for the Cobbers.

Concordia will return to action after the Easter holiday when they host Bethel on Monday, Apr. 17 at 4:00pm in a series that was postponed from Apr. 1.
