ST. PETER, Minn. (4/12/06)-- Concordia allowed four runs in the very first inning of the first game against Gustavus and could never recover as they dropped a pair of games to the Gusties 7-0 and 6-0 in St. Peter, Minn. on Wednesday.
The Cobbers were only able to scratch out six hits during the entire two games and were swept for the first time in MIAC play this season. Concordia is now 3-5 in conference play and 8-12 overall. With the two wins, the Gusties improve to 9-1 in the league and 15-5 overall.
After Gustavus scored four runs in the opening inning of game 1, junior pitcher Joyce DeWitz took over and held the Cobbers to six hits over the next 12 innings. She pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout in the opener and then backed that up with a four-hit, shutout in the nightcap. She was replaced in the sixth inning in the second game but not before she picked up her eighth and ninth wins of the season. All told, she struck out 17 batters in 12 innings of work and did not allow a run.
In the
second game, Concordia starting pitcher Jill Reinert matched DeWitz pitch-for-pitch until the fourth inning when Gustavus exploded for three runs off of two hits and were the beneficiary of one Cobber error. The Gusties tacked on three more in the bottom of the fifth inning to complete the sweep.
The lone offensive bright spot for the Cobbers came from the bat of leadoff hitter Kelli Niess. Niess went 1-for-3 in the opener and then collected two more hits in four at-bats in the second game to finish the day with three of Concordia's six hits. Lindy Sparby and Amanda Johnson added hits in the second game and freshman Amanda Michaelson had the other hit in game 1.
Concordia will stay on the road and play St. Olaf on Thursday, Apr. 13 at 4:00pm in Northfield.
