Doubleheader Recap: MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/24/10)-- Concordia continued to sing the big-innings blues on Saturday against St. Mary's. The Cobbers gave up a six-run inning, a four-run frame and an 11-run inning as they were swept by the Cardinals 10-3 and 12-4. Concordia had leads in both games but were unable to stay away from giving up a big crooked number and were swept for the first time in four conference double dips. The Cobbers are now 5-13 in conference play and 8-27 in overall games while the Cardinals up their record to 9-7 in the MIAC and 12-20 in all games. The first game started out as a pitcher's dual between the Cobbers' Kesley Jones and the Cardinals' Mallory Betzold. Each pitcher only allowed one hi in the first two innings and Jones did that one better by shutting down SMU 1-2-3 in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, Concordia scored a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Kayla Hendrickson doubled with one out to start the CC scoring attack. Nikki Clouse then followed with a single that advanced Hendrickson to third. Kaia Sele then got a huge two-out hit when she doubled to right field and scored both Hendrickson and Clouse. The lead would last until the top of the fifth inning. Jones was able to work out of a jam in the fourth but couldn't do the same in the fifth when St. Mary's scored six runs on five hits. The big blow in the inning was a three-run home run from the bat of shortstop Katy Gannon. The Cobbers would get one back in the bottom of the sixth when Sele scored on a sacrifice fly from Joelle Link. The Cardinals then put the game out of reach in the seventh when they scored four more times. Concordia had seven hits in the opener. Clouse and Sele had two hits each. Clouse was 2-for-4 while Sele went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. The second game was almost a carbon copy of the first with neither team having much offensive success in the first 4.5 innings. The Cardinals scored the only run of the early innings when Gannon scored on a two-out single from Hanna Schmitt. The game would stay at 1-0 until then bottom of the fifth inning. The Cobbers were finally able to get to SMU pitcher Jaci Prondzinski. Prondzinski had retired six of the first seven batters she faced to start the game and has only allowed three hits through the first four innings. In the fifth, the Cobbers finally started to time her pitches and erupted for four runs on three hits. All three hits were of the extra-base variety. Hendrickson hit a solo home run to start the scoring parade, then Sele delivered a run-scoring double before Maddie Haroldson hit a two-run homer over the left field fence. It was Hendrickson's third long ball of the year and the second shot for Haroldson. In the circle, Link stymied the Cardinals over the first five innings by allowing only one run. Link was lifted to start the sixth inning and that's when St. Mary's broke out the bats. They scored 11 times and knocked out seven hits. SMU was also aided by a pair of Cobber errors that kept CC in the field for extra outs. Concordia had nine hits in the nightcap. Sele posted her second two-hit game of the day. She finished the day 4-for-6 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Haroldson went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs on her HR. Hendrickson was the third member of CC to have two hits in the finale. She was 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in a run. The Cobbers will finish off the 2010 season by hosting Hamline on Sunday, Apr. 25 at 1 p.m. and then Carleton on Monday, Apr. 26 at 4 p.m.
