Doubleheader Recap:

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (4/07/10)-- Concordia opened the MIAC season by splitting a pair of games at Bethel on Wednesday. The Cobbers cracked out 13 hits in the opener and claimed an 11-5 win but then in the second game they stranded eight runners and lost 7-3.

With the split the Cobbers move to 4-15 on the season and have now won two of the last four. Bethel is now 9-13 on the year and with the win in the second game ended a seven-game losing skid.

Concordia freshman first baseman Kaia Sele was the only CC player with more than one hit in each game. Sele was 3-for-5 in the opener and then a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap to finish at 6-for-8 for the day. She also scored four runs and drove in four runs.

The first game was decided in the first two innings as the Cobbers scored four times in the first and added three more in the second. CC gave up five runs in the third but then shut the door on the Royal offense for the rest of the game. Concordia would tack on a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to finish the game with a six-run victory.

Kesley Jones went the distance in the circle for Concordia. She allowed only two earned runs and struck out four. After the five-run third frame, Jones did not give up a hit and did not have a base runner advance past first base.

The Cobbers had three players with three hits in the opener. Besides Sele, Maddie Haroldson went 3-for-4 and Joelle Link was 3-for-5. Haroldson had four RBI and had a pair of doubles while Link had 3 RBI. Becki Zimmerman had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

In the second game, Concordia scored two runs in the top of the first but then watched as Bethel seized control of the game by scoring four in the bottom of the frame. CC got to within one at 4-3 when they scored a single run in the third but that would be as close as they would get. The Cobbers had two chances to tie the game in the fifth and sixth when they had runners in scoring position but were unable to come up with the clutch hit. The Royals then came up with three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to finish the scoring and come up with the split.

Sele and Nikki Clouse were the only two Concordia players with more than one hit in the finale. Clouse was 2-for-3 and finished the day 3-for-5.

Link started the second game for CC and pitched the first 5.2 innings. She allowed all seven runs on seven hits. Brynn Johnson recorded the final out for Concordia.

The Cobbers will return to Moorhead to host their home opener on Thursday, Apr. 8 at 4 p.m. when they square off against St. Ben's.
