Gameday Game Recap

MOORHEAD, Minn.
(4/29/08)-- Concordia hit four home runs against Valley City State on Tuesday but it wasn't enough as the Cobbers lost to the Vikings 15-9 and 8-0 in five innings. The two losses drop Concordia's overall record to 8-28 on the season. Valley City wins for the fifth time in the past six games and improves to 20-23 on the year.

The first game was all offense, while the nightcap turned into a statement from Viking pitcher Krystal Hathaway. The two teams combined for 24 runs, 27 hits and six home runs in the opener. Concordia hit four homers and took a 4-0 lead in the first inning but was unable to hold onto the lead and fell by six. After the first inning, the Vikings proceeded to score at least one run in every inning and scored at least three runs in the second, third and fifth frames. The Cobbers were unable to keep pace despite the four round-trippers. The closest they would come would be in the bottom of fourth inning when they cut the deficit to 9-7. Valley City scored three times in the top of the fifth and went on to post the win.

In the opener, CC third baseman Maddie Haroldson hammered two home runs, while junior Amanda Michaelson and sophomore Emily Jensen also hit dingers. Haroldson finished the game by going 3-for-4 and driving in three runs. Michaelson was 2-for-3 and also had three RBI's.

Hathaway led the Viking offense by going 4-for-5 and driving in four runs. She also hit her second home run of the season and finished the game on the mound. She came on in the bottom of the seventh inning and struck out two of the four batters she faced.

Hathaway used the momentum from the first game to stymie the Cobbers in the second. She pitched all five innings and only allowed three hits to earn her sixth win of the year. She did not allow a hit after the second inning and retired the final 10 batters she faced. Three different CC players had hits in the game. Michaelson went 1-for-2 in the finale and raised her team-leading season average to .312 on the year. She has now hit safely in 10 straight games.

Becki Zimmerman pitched game two for Concordia. She allowed four eanred runs but was hampered by the seven walks she allowed in the game.

The big offensive inning for the Vikings in game two came in the first inning when they sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored six runs on only one hit. They were aided by two CC errors and four walks.

Concordia will finish off the 2008 season when they host St. Ben's on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
