MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/20/08)--
Concordia dropped a pair of one-run games to Hamline on Sunday and was swept by the Pipers 2-1 and 3-2. The first game went to 10 innings before HU was able to post the decision. The losses snap a four-game winning streak for the Cobbers at home. CC is now 7-23 overall in 2008 and 4-12 in the MIAC. The Pipers raise their overall mark to 14-10 on the year. They are now 8-4 in league play and have won five straight games.
The doubleheader was virtually even with Hamline claiming the edge by collecting a timely hit in each game. In the opener, the teams traded single runs in the fifth inning and then could not punch home a run for the rest of regulation and for the first two extra innings. The game was finally decided in the 10th inning after the teams went to the international tie-breaker rule. Placing a runner on second base to start the inning, the Pipers scored on a single after the runner advanced to third on a fielder's choice. The winning run would come on the very next batter when Grace Weinreich singled through the left side of the infield.
Concordia wasn't able to come up with the clutch hit in the bottom of the 10th and fell 2-1. The Cobbers had the tying runner on third base with no outs but then watched as the next batter was thrown out trying to steal second base after reaching on a fielder's choice. A ground out to third followed by a walk and then a fly out to center field officially ended the game for CC in the opener.
Hamline outhit Concordia 9-6 in the 10 innings. Only one person on either team had more than one hit in the extra-inning affair. The Pipers' Brenna Healy went 3-for-5. Cobber starting pitcher Erin Johnson went the full 10 innings and did not give up an earned run. She struck out four in the contest. Jessalyn Weaver went the distance for HU and also did not allow an earned run as she earned her fifth win of the year.
The second game was more of the same. The two teams traded runs in the first inning and then the two pitchers took control. For Concordia, third baseman Amanda Michaelson hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. It was her first long ball of the season. Hamline scored the decisive two runs in the sixth inning. They picked up three hits in the frame, two of whicher were doubles. CC got to within one in the bottom of the seventh but were never able to get the tying run on base.
The Cobbers had six hits in the finale as opposed to four for the Pipers. Michaelson was the only player to get more than one hit. She went 2-for-3. Erin Johnson once again pitched a complete game. She only allowed four hits and two earned runs. Kelsey Tacheny picked up her sixth win of the year by scattering six hits and aonlt allowing one earned run.
Concordia will play at Gustavus on Wednesday, Apr. 23 and then at St. Olaf on Thursday, Apr. 24.
