MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/19/08)--
Concordia rode the arm of sophomore pitcher Erin Johnson to a pair of conference wins against Macalester on Saturday in Moorhead. The Cobbers used a four-run, fifth inning the first game to post a 6-4 victory and then had Amanda Michaelson come through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in the finale to record a 4-3 win.
It marks the second consecutive home sweep for the Cobbers. They are now 4-10 in the MIAC and 6-21 overall. The Scots, who lost their fifth one-run game of the conference season, fall to 2-12 in league play and 7-19 in all games.
Johnson gave Concordia exactly what the doctor ordered. She pitched all 14 innings on the day and gave up only one multiple-run inning in the two games. She allowed six earned runs on the day and struck out six. She was able to keep the Scots' offensive attack under check by spotting her change-up all day long. It is the first time this year she has picked up two MIAC wins in a single doubleheader and she improves her season record to 6-16.
Emily Jensen led the Cobber offense as she had two multiple-hit games. She went 2-for-4 in the first game and then 2-for-3 in the second and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two.
In the opener, neither team was able to score until the fourth inning when the teams traded single runs. Macalester got their lone run on a two-out single by Hayley Reeves. CC countered with one in the bottom of the frame when Becki Zimmerman hit her third home run of the year. Zimmerman's solo shot hit off the top of the wall in center field and bounced over the fence to tie the game at 1-1.
The Scots retook the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The bottom of the fifth proved to be the pivotal point on the day. The first five batters reached base for CC and Amanda Johnson capped the four-run inning by hitting a double down the left field line that plated a pair of runs.
Macalester threatened in the top of the seventh inning. They had the tying run on first base with two outs but then Erin Johnson got top Scot hitter Crystal Barriga to fly out to right field.
Concordia outhit the Scots 10-8 in the opener. Jensen and Michaelson had two hits each and Amanda Johnson had the critical double that drove in two runs in the fifth inning. Macalester was led by Katie Grudnowski who went 3-for-3 and drove in a run. Ali Nystrom was 1-for-3 from the leadoff spot and had a team-high two RBI's.
The second game was a tight affair throughout the entire seven innings with neither team being able to take more than a one-run lead all game long. CC scored a single run in the top of the first and then Macalester tied the contest in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly. The Scots took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a solo shot by Barriga. It was her third long ball of the year. Concordia then regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly and a clutch at-bat from third baseman Maddie Haroldson. Haroldson fought off several two-strike pitches before lacing a double down the left field line.
The Scots responded with the tying run in the top of the sixth inning and that set the stage for the Cobbers' late-game heroics. Jensen hit a fly ball to center field that got lost in the sun and dropped for a double. Michaelson then pulled a pitch into the left-center gap on the next at-bat to win the game and hand the Cobbers the series sweep.
Both teams had eight hits in the second game. Jensen went 2-for-3 to finish the day 4-for-7 and up her season batting average to .253. Michaelson was 1-for-3 in the nightcap and 3-for-6 for the series. The only other CC player with more than one hit in the second game was Laura Johnson who went 2-for-3 and was also aided by the bright sun in center field.
Barriga broke out of a mini-slump after the first game and was 3-for-3 in the second game. Reeves went 2-for-3 in game two and finished the day 3-for-6.
Concordia will cap off their back-to-back home doubleheader weekend when they host Hamline on Sunday, Apr. 20 at 1 p.m.
