ST. PAUL, Minn. (4/17/08)-- Concordia finished off their string of back-to-back-to-back doubleheaders by losing to No.5-ranked St. Thomas 9-0 and 12-2 in St. Paul on Thursday. Both games were called after five innings due to the eight-run rules.
The Cobbers started their tiresome trio of series on Tuesday by sweeping Carleton at home. On Wednesday they lost a pair of games at Bethel and then finished off their St. Paul swing by losing twice to the Tommies - who ran their conference winning streak to 46 games with the sweep.
Concordia failed to connect on a hit in the first game as four different St. Thomas pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter. In the first inning of the opener, CC freshman Jamie Odden led off the game with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Emily Jensen then advanced Odden to third with a sacrifice bunt and catcher Amanda Michaelson followed that with a walk of her own. Having seen enough out of starting pitcher Maria Bye, Tommie head coach John Tschida yanked the two-time All-American and brought in Marta Radcliffe who proceeded to strike out 10 of the next 11 batters she faced.
Cobber pitcher Erin Johnson held her own against the Tommie offensive dynamo at the start of the game. Johnson hurled two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the third frame. UST was able to score six runs in the fateful third, three of which were unearned. St. Thomas then added three more runs in the fourth inning and held CC hitless through all five innings.
The second game was less dramatic than the first. St. Thomas scored two runs in the first inning and then scored four runs in each of the second and third stanzas. The only decision to be played out was whether the Cobbers would get a hit in the series. That was decided in the top of the fifth inning when CC second baseman Amanda Johnson led off the inning with a home run to center field. For Johnson it was her second of the season and ninth in her career. Concordia was able to tack on one more run in the inning when Nicole Diekman punched a two-out single to right field that scored Becki Zimmerman.
Zimmerman was the pitcher of record for Concordia. She made her third carrer MIAC start and gave up 12 hits over four innings. She struck out one and walked three in the outing.
The Cobbers will return home for a pair of games at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex over the weekend. CC will host Macalester on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 1 p.m. and Hamline on Sunday, Apr. 20 at 1 p.m.
