Concordia committed seven errors in the first game and had a seventh-inning rally fall just short in the second game and lost twice to bethel in St. Paul on Wednesday. The Cobbers allowed six unearned runs en rout to a 9-4 loss in game 1 and then fell 4-3 in the nightcap.
The two losses snaps the Cobbers' two-game winning streak. CC is now 5-19 overall and 2-8 in the MIAC. The Royals put an end to their two-game losing skid and improve to 5-3 in conference play and 13-10 overall.
The opener was decided in the third and fifth innings where Concordia gave up three runs in each frame - only one of which was earned. After taking a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the third, the CC defense committed three errors and allowed three unearned runs. In the fifth, after Concordia had tied the game at 4-4, the Cobbers made one more costly miscue and conceded two unearned runs.
Concordia had seven hits in the first game and were led by Amanda Michaelson and Erin Johnson who had two hits each. Michaelson went 2-for-2 and drove in a run and Johnson was 2-for-3 with a lone RBI. Johnson also went the distance on the mound for the Cobbers. She allowed 10 hits but only three earned runs.
The second game was decided in the final two innings of play. The teams traded scoreless innings until fifth when BU posted two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Cobbers go one back in the top of the sixth to cut the margin to 2-1. The Royals then countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-out triple.
Trailing 4-1 heading into their final at-bat, Concordia scored two runs after there were two outs in the frame and left the game-tying runner stranded on third base. The big hit for CC in the inning was a triple off the bat of Laura Johnson.
The Cobbers outhit the Royals 5-4 in the second game. Five different CC players picked up one hit each. Becki Zimmerman started her second game in as many days. After shutting out Carleton on Tuesday, Zimmerman allowed just four hits but also allowed four free passes.
Concordia will stay in St. Paul and take on No.5-ranked St. Thomas on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Tommies have won 44 straight conference games.
