MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/13/08)--
What started out as a simple doubleheader that was scheduled to start at 2 p.m. turned into an all-day affair that finally got under way a little after 3 p.m. and finished well after the 6 o'clock hour. The Cobbers battled all the way through the marathon day at the park but wound up dropping a pair of games to second-place Augsburg on Sunday. CC fell 4-0 in the opener and then almost came up with a seventh-inning rally in game two before losing 5-4.
The two losses stretches Concordia's losing skid to six games. CC continues to look for their first win since returning home from Florida in March. The Cobbers are now 0-6 in conference play and 3-17 overall. The Auggies continue their hot ways in the MIAC by earning their ninth win in the first 10 conference games. Augsburg is now 13-15 overall and 9-1 in league play.
The biggest highlight for Concordia came in the second game when freshman Jamie Odden cracked her second collegiate home run to give the Cobbers a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Odden has only two extra-base hits on the year and both are roundtrippers.
Odden's heroics would be short-lived as the Auggies would tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. CC responded by scoring a single run in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. Augsburg grabbed a 5-3 lead by scoring one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
The Cobbers almost came back to tie the game in the seventh. With two outs in the frame, Erin Johnson singled home Amanda Johnson to bring the score to within one at 5-4. Odden then singled to advance Erin Johnson to second base. After a pitching change, Amanda Michaelson singled to load the bases and set up a dramatic finish. Unfortunately for the Cobbers Emily Jensen wasn't able to come up with a walk-off hit and CC fell 5-4.
The Cobbers picked up three hits in the first game and seven in the nightcap. Odden led the way by getting three hits on the day. Becki Zimmerman and Amanda Johnson were the only other CC players with more than one hit in the series. Both players had two hits. Johnson hit her first home run of the year in the fourth inning to put the Cobbers up 3-2.
Concordia will now play five doubleheaders in the next seven days. They will host Carleton on Tuesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. and then play at Bethel on Wednesday and at nationally-ranked St. Thomas on Thursday. CC will return home to host Macalester on Saturday and Hamline on Sunday.
