Gameday Game Recap

ST. JOSEPH, Minn.
(5/02/07)-- Concordia dropped a pair of games against Carleton on Wednesday at St. Ben's to finish the 2007 season. The Cobbers lost a heartbreaker in the first game 6-5 in eight innings and were blown out in the second, losing 9-1.

The two losses end CC's year with a 12-22 overall mark and an 8-14 record in MIAC play. The Cobbers lost their last four of the season and 12 of their last 16. Carleton finishes their season on a high note by posting their 10th win of the year. They end 2007 with a 10-28 overall record and a 6-16 mark in the conference.

In the opener, Concordia scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to take a  5-2 lead. After they got the leadoff batter in the bottom half of the frame, they allowed the Knights to score four times and take the 6-5 win.

The second game ended in six innings due to the eight-run rule. The Cobbers allowed Carleton to score three runs in each of the second, fifth and sixth innings.

Cobber sophomore pitcher Jill Reinert came up just short of the school record for strikeouts in a single season. Reinert had seven K's in the opener and finished the year with 138 strikeouts. That mark is four shy of the record of 141 set by Erin Gunderson in 2000.

Offensively, Kelli Niess went 2-for-5 at the plate on the day and finished her campaign with a .424 average. That is the third highest single-season batting average in program history. Niess also stole one base in the series to bring her record-setting season total to 24 and her career total to 69.

Emily Jensen and Shantelle Nogowski were the only other Cobbers with more than one hit in the series. Jensen went 1-for-4 in the opener and 2-for-3 in the second game to complete a 3-for-7 day at the plate. She had two of the four Cobber hits in the nightcap. Nogowski picked up a single hit in each game.

Reinert was handed the loss in the opener. She pitched 7.1 innings but gave up only one earned run. She allowed eight hits and struck out the seven batters. Lisa Kott made the start in the second game and lasted 5.1 innings. She gave up 11 hits and four earned runs.
