MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/23/07)-- In their final non-conference game of the season, Concordia rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game against Northland (Wis.) to post a 2-0, 4-2 sweep over the Lumberjills in Moorhead on Monday. Freshman center fielder Emily Jensen hit a walkoff, two-run home run to secure the Cobbers' second straight win over Northland. It was Jensen's second game-winning homer in the past eight days.
The Cobbers continue to shine at home in 2007. With the two victories, CC runs its record at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex to 7-1 on the year. Concordia is now 11-17 overall on the season. The sweep over Northland also puts an end to the Cobbers' four-game losing skid. The Lumberjills lose for only the third time in the past ten games and fall to 15-14 on the year.
Jill Reinert once again posted two stellar outings as she works through her breakout season. The sophomore pitcher threw a pair of complete games on Monday and earned the win in both contests to improve her overall record to 9-12 on the season. She was the catalyst behind the team's win in the opener. She went seven innings, allowed five hits and struck out nine. It was her second shutout of the year. She cruised throughout the entire game and didn't give up an extra base hit. In the second game she threw six shutout innings. Her only hiccup came in the sixth inning when she allowed two runs on three hits. She gave up eight hits in the nightcap and struck out four more batter to run her season total to 116. She needs 26 more strikeouts to break the school record for strikeouts in a season set by Erin Gunderson in 2000.
Concordia also broke out of their recent hitting slump. In their previous five losses, the Cobbers were hitting .175 with runners on base, .222 with runners on third base and .219 with two outs in the inning. Against the Lumberjills, CC hit .320 with runners on base. They also pounded out 14 hits in the series.
In the opener, they scored a single run in the first two innings and Reinert made it hold up from that point forward. Senior shortstop Kelli Niess went 3-for-3 to account for three of the team's five hits in the game.
The second game boiled down to the final inning. Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, leadoff hitter Amanda Michaelson snaked a grounder past the third baseman into left field for a single. Reinert then advanced Michaelson to second with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. Niess followed with a double into the left-center gap that scored Michaelson and tied the game at 2-2. That set the stage for Jensen who drove a pitch just over the wall in center field. Concordia finished the inning with three of their nine hits in the game.
Niess stayed hot in the nightcap by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. For the series, she went 6-for-7 to raise her team-leading batting average to .408 on the year. Jensen and Michaelson were the other two CC players that had more than one hit in the game. Jensen was 2-for-4 and Michaelson was 2-for-3.
Concordia will return to league action when they host Hamline on Saturday, Apr. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
