Gameday Game Recap

WINONA, Minn.
(4/21/07)-- Cue the Grateful Dead with their hit "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been."
The Cobbers finished off a two-day, 371-mile odyssey that saw them go from the thick of the MIAC playoff hunt to just another team on the outside looking in. Concordia was swept for the second straight day, losing 4-3 and 7-2 to St. Mary's in Winona on Saturday. The two defeats drops the Cobbers into sixth place in the league standings with a conference record of 7-9. When CC left on Friday, they were 7-5 and in a tie for third place.

After failing to score a run in the Cobbers' two losses at St. Ben's on Friday, it took the team six more innings to get their first run of the road trip. Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the sixth, Concordia scored on an error and then tied the game on a two-out home run by junior Amanda Johnson. For Johnson it was her first homer of the year.

Unfortunately the lead was short-lived as the Cardinals scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. St. Mary's broke the 3-3 tie on a wild pitch with two outs in the frame.

Cobber starting pitcher Jill Reinert three earned runs and seven hits in the six innings that she worked. At the plate, Concordia recorded three hits. Besides Johnson's home run, Kelli Niess and Shantelle Nogowski also had base knocks in the opener. Two of the team's three hits in the game came in the run-producing sixth inning.

In the second game, St. Mary's (14-10/9-5) waited until the fifth inning to break open a 1-1 game. The teams traded runs in the third inning and then the Cardinals exploded for three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach. Erin Johnson started the game and pitched the first five innings. She wasn't able to produce the same magic she had on Friday when she limited St. Ben's to only one run and three hits. She gave up five earned runs on Saturday as SMU nicked her for eight hits.

The Cobebrs had six hits in the finale but was never able string them together in an inning. They ended up stranding seven runners in the contest. Freshman Emily Jensen went 2-for-4 with two RBI's to lead CC.

Concordia will return home to host Northland (Wis.) on Monday, Apr. 23 at 4 p.m. in their final non-conference series of the season.
